Ryan Juguan was born in Manila, Philippines and lived there until he was 11 years old. When his parents discovered that he had Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or brittle bones, they chose to relocate to the United States. It took Ryan & his family 10 years to complete this process and ultimately move to the inner city of Chicago.
Ryan has fractured more than 30 bones in his lifetime, and as a result of this uses a manual wheelchair when needing to travel longer distances. He has competed in international tournaments for Wheelchair Basketball in Japan, as well as in the national & international level of paraclimbing in Austria & France. Through these sports, he gained confidence, grew his self esteem and built lasting friendships with his teammates and peers.
Slacklining became a part of his life in 2018 after graduating from the University of Illinois. He began to use it as part of his warm up and cool down routines for climbing. Slacklining helps Ryan cope during stressful times and provides an outlet for anxiety. He hopes to take it to the next level, highlining.
Ryan aims to inspire others to pursue the sport and to provide accessibility to the sport. Whether it’s the slacklining or climbing community, Ryan feels he is responsible for advocating for people with disabilities. He hopes this dialogue will help shift people’s perspectives around accessibility in outdoor spaces and recreational activities.
